The NMC in the Standards for Learning and Assessment (2008) stated that placement providers would decide in the first instance who may be considered as a sign-off mentor and make provision to record these mentors on local registers. Initally work was underway within our Trust to identify the required numbers by June 2010 however the NMC have recently communicated that from September the 1st 2009 the full standard will become effective. To attain sign off status after this date mentors are required to be supervised on at least three occasions signing off proficiency by an existing sign-off mentor (NMC Standards to support learning and assessment in practice 2008 p. 21).
It is essential that mentors with experience of supervising final placement students complete the Self Assessment Algorithm available on the Mentorship Intranet and Internet pages before September the 1st 2009 so that the support of Module/Term 9 management block students can continue without delay or disruption.
